Comment: As the serious researcher I am, I contacted my only source of Romanian football. She jumped when I wanted info on Gaz Metan. Not because of the football club but because she is now director of the Competition Council’s Directorate for Industry and Energy. And Gaz Metan simply means “methane gas”, what the home city, Medias I Transylvania, is famous for. Gaz Metan the team is yet to make the town famous, it has only made a few seasons in the top division and the 7th position last season was by far the best result ever.
This is how we beat them: Gaz Metan earned the spot in Europe by finishing 7th in the domestic league. The Romanian league may have been hot a few years ago when Cluj was investing hard and the top teams still deserve respect, but 7th placed Gaz is not so intimidating. We just have to watch out for Brazilian Eric Pereira, who was second best in the Romanian goal scoring league this season and who plays as a number 10 (albeit with number 27) in Gaz Metan’s 4-2-3-1 line-up.
